Fibre cement vs. vinyl siding

These two building materials are good, durable siding options and both have the ability to mimic wood siding but without the maintenance of natural wood. However, there are several differences between them that makes each unique.

Fibre cement siding

Made from a mixture of cement, wood fibre, cellulose and sand. Compared to vinyl siding, fibre cement siding is more resistant to impact damage, moisture damage and extreme weather. It also has superior fire resistance. With proper maintenance it lasts longer; up to 50 years depending on the manufacturer. It is heavier than vinyl siding making it more difficult to install. Fibre cement siding also comes with a higher price tag. It is initially a more expensive option but has a better return on investment due to its longer lifespan. Currently it is available in fewer colours than vinyl siding but has a more realistic wood-look appearance that gives it a high-end aesthetic. There are many styles and textures to choose from.

Vinyl siding

Made from PVC. Vinyl siding is available in many different styles, colours, textures and trim options. It is not as durable as fibre cement siding but is a much more economical choice. Vinyl siding is lightweight and installation is fairly easy for the average DIYer. Some vinyl siding is available with a built-in insulation backing and contributes to the energy efficiency of the home.
