What is colour drenching?

This stylish colour trend involves painting every surface of a room one colour, including walls, ceiling, trim, doors and built-ins. It’s a technique that removes the visual break between colours while blurring the boundaries between surfaces of the same colour. What makes this look different from popular all-white rooms is the switch to dark colours. Wrapping a room in a single dark colour is a great way to make a bold statement and create a cozy, intimate mood.

Colour drenching can be used in rooms of any size but works best in smaller rooms like bathrooms, home offices, dining rooms and bedrooms. It should be noted that rooms painted in dark colours tend to look smaller and will require more lighting. Colour drenching can also be used with lighter or neutral colours for a softer, sophisticated look that won’t overpower. You can add visual interest by the type of paint finish you use.

Choose a single paint finish, such as flat, for all surfaces to achieve a modern, unified look. To add more depth to your colour choice, use an assortment of paint finishes – flat for ceiling, eggshell for walls and satin for trim. The decor and furniture in your room should break up the intensity of the dominant paint colour.

Go for neutrals that contrast with the paint colour or monochromatic colours in different shades to complement it. To add further style, incorporate textures, wood-tones and metal finishes.
