Whether you are choosing new siding or are considering painting your home’s exterior, the colour palette you choose should complement your home’s architecture and fit well within the neighbourhood.

Exterior colours are not easily changed so it’s important to choose a palette that will stand the test of time. Current exterior colour trends are more earthy and muted than in years past. Popular choices for 2025 include warm greys, beige, sage green, and cinnamon.

The number of colours used on architectural features, such as gables, bump-outs, arches and columns, has also decreased. Gone are two-tone or three-tone palettes. Instead, consider using one main colour for the entire house including the trim, or accent your trim in a single colour that is either lighter or darker than the main house colour.

Be sure to factor in the colour of your roof as part of your overall palette. If you are not replacing your roof anytime soon, the wall colour should complement the existing roof. If you are replacing your roof, popular shingle colours include variations of brown and grey. For a bold look, consider charcoal or black roofing materials.

Other important considerations include the permanent elements of your home such as stone, brick, or masonry. Your colour palette should coordinate with the underlying tones of these materials.

Simple

A monochromatic colour palette adds a current and contemporary style to your home. This look isn’t for every home though. Your home should have an abundance of textures and architectural elements to give it visual interest. Using a single colour can achieve a sleek and understated aesthetic.

Classic

Choosing one colour for your home plus another colour for the trim is a classic look that suits almost every architectural style. The contrasting trim colour draws attention to architectural details, like window frames, door casings, columns, siding details and roof gables.

Bold

This colour choice is for anyone who wants to make a statement and give their home personality. It’s important to choose colours that are rich and saturated rather than bright. For those that want a bit of boldness, but not on the entire house, consider painting just the front door.
