8 DIY skills for the homeowner

Do-it-yourself skills are fundamental abilities that every homeowner should know in order to maintain and improve a property. Calling a professional for small jobs around the house is not necessary if you develop these 8 essential DIY skills. The more experience you have with DIY projects, the better your skills will become.

1. Home maintenance

This is a big skill. It includes keeping your property clean, in good condition and being able to recognize possible issues before they turn into big problems. Keeping your home properly maintained is a big money saver for all the different systems in your home.

2. Know the right tool for the job

There are the usual cutting and fastening tools that all DIYers will have in their toolbox but every project will have its own special set of tools. It’s important to use specialized tools when they are needed. You’ll have a more successful outcome to your project and end up with a well-stocked toolbox. The more projects you take on, the more tools you’ll collect.

3. Know the right hardware for the job

Just like having the right tools for a project, using the right hardware will have a direct impact on your project’s success. Educate yourself on the hardware options available.

4. Basic carpentry

A few basic carpentry skills will take you a long way. These include measuring accurately, cutting in a straight line, the different ways of drilling, knowledge of angles and joinery, types of wood and building plumb structures.

5. Basic plumbing

Small plumbing jobs include fixing small leaks, unclogging drains and replacing a faucet. Not everyone will be comfortable with these plumbing jobs but you should at least know how to shut off the main water supply.

6. Basic electrical

This skill many people would rather leave to the professionals but with enough knowledge, small electrical jobs
can be done by the average DIYer. These include changing a light fixture or replacing an electrical outlet.

7. Painting

This is an easy DIY skill to learn. Painting a room is not difficult. The skill is doing careful and thorough prep work before the paint hits the walls. Preparation is key for a professional looking result.

8. Know when to hire a professional

If a project is complicated, dangerous or needs to be done quickly, call in a professional. Your set of DIY skills will dictate what jobs are beyond your capability.
