There’s all kinds of advice out there for what colour to paint small spaces so it’s wise to choose the advice that works best for your particular room and your personal taste. Generally, most people want to make small spaces look bigger and there are two schools of thought.
The first, and most popular, is painting small spaces with pale neutrals that reflect light and make the walls recede. The second school of thought is to paint small spaces with medium to dark tones that absorb light and blur the edges of the room to create the illusion of greater depth and space. How well your room is lit may steer you one way or another.
A well-lit room can probably handle a medium to dark paint colour without reducing it into a cave-like space. Rooms with small windows or no windows will benefit with the lightest colours. For these rooms, adding a wall treatment like white wainscotting built three-quarters up the wall gives you the opportunity to add a small amount of dark colour above but will still keep the room looking bright and open.
Keep in mind that there are no rules. Sometimes the smallest room in the house, like a powder room, looks great when painted in a dark dramatic colour. Whichever way you go, you should choose a paint colour you love. The colour of your room should make you feel good whether it’s a bright white or the darkest grey.
