A good exterior painting job will extend the life of your siding and trim and increase the value of your house. Learn the best techniques for applying paint quickly and thoroughly.
1. Wash
A thorough washing is a must before painting any exterior surface. Use a pressure washer to remove dirt and grime build up. Start from the top and work to the bottom.
2. Scrape
Paint that has peeled, bubbled, or blistered has got to go. Use a putty knife or paint scraper to scrape loose paint from different angles. Use a drop cloth to gather fallen debris.
3. Sand
With loose paint removed, it’s time to sand the surface. Feather out the edges of existing paint and where you have scraped. Use an orbital sander with 50 or 80-grit sandpaper.
4. Patch
After the sanding is done, it’s time to fill cracks and gaps. Repair or replace any rotted or damaged surfaces, and apply caulk around the trim.
5. Paint
Paint trim first using an angled sash or trim brush. Be careful not to paint windows shut. For large areas, a paint sprayer will speed up the job. Work from top to bottom.
