Choosing the right interior finishes for your home renovation

Choosing the interior finishes for your home is the fun part of a renovation. But don’t assume it’s an easy process. For most renovations, budget will play the biggest factor in the finishes you choose. Do your homework and research the total cost of each project so you can make an accurate budget.

With every renovation, there will be prep work like demolition, structural repairs, upgrading and moving plumbing and electrical, and relocating doors and windows. Once the prep work is done, the remaining budget can be spent on interior finishes. If the budget for the prep work goes over, be prepared to adjust your finishes budget.

To give your renovation longevity, it’s important to choose finishes that stand the test of time and you won’t be tired of in five years. Use today’s trends sparingly and on things that can be easily changed, like paint colour and decorative accessories.

Try to use the same finishes throughout your whole house if possible. For instance, use the same interior door and handle style throughout the whole house. This will give your house an overall cohesiveness and won’t look like patchwork upgrades.

Because kitchens and bathrooms are the most expensive to renovate, choose those finishes first. Let the style of those rooms dictate the style of the rest of the house. Keep in mind that if you want your entire main level to have the same flooring as your kitchen renovation, your budget will need to increase to cover that added flooring cost.
