Pergola vs. arbour

The words pergola and arbour are often used interchangeably to describe an outdoor structure with posts supporting an open roof of beams. These two structures are actually two separate things. Basically, an arbour is a smaller version of a pergola. Both of these should not be confused with a gazebo, which is a free-standing structure, often octagonal or hexagonal in shape and with a solid roof. Pergolas and arbours are an intermediate DIY project that will add traditional or contemporary charm to any outdoor space.

Pergola

A pergola creates the perfect space for an outdoor dining and entertaining area or a place to simply relax. Although pergolas do not provide one hundred percent shade, there are options you can add to give you that shade. A shade sail, fabric panels, lattice, Palruf PVC panels or climbing plants are a few choices. Pergolas can be built as a stand-alone structure or attached directly to your home and can be as big as you want.

Arbour

A garden arbour is a much smaller structure usually consisting of two or four posts and has a simple slatted roof. It can also have a trellis on each side to support climbing plants. Arbours are typically built as a garden accent to blend into the landscape or as an entrance feature to link two garden areas.
