Expert tips for building a deck

Building a deck is a fairly easy project for the average DIYer, but it’s also a project that must be built correctly for the safety of those who use it and to ensure the deck’s longevity. There is a lot of advice out there on how to build a deck but often helpful tips are learned by experience. Below are insider tips to guide you to a successful deck project.

1. Use the correct fasteners

Each step of building a deck requires specific fasteners so it’s very important to use the correct screws, bolts and nails. Each fastener required has been engineered for a specific purpose and weight load. To ensure the structural integrity of your deck, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The Deck Experts at TIMBER MART can give you advice on the appropriate fasteners for the material you are working with and for each step of the build.

2. Build correct stair risers

The mistake is making stair risers with equal sized notches. All notches should be the same size except the bottom one. The bottom step will not have a tread below it so you must subtract the thickness of the tread from the height of the bottom riser. If you fail to do this, the bottom step will be too high.

3. Set up a command station

Keeping your work area organized is a must so you can keep working without interruptions. Set up a flat surface in the shade to keep all your tools in one spot, check your plan, charge batteries and sort through hardware. It can be as simple as a plywood surface held up by two sawhorses. Keep a large trash can handy for garbage and wood scraps. Put deck fasteners in a plastic tub so they don’t disappear in grass or under sawdust.

4. Build square

Start your project by making sure you are building square. Use diagonal bracing to ensure your project remains square throughout the building process.

5. Long measure

It’s difficult to measure a long length with a tape measure without a second person holding the tape end. The hooked end of a typical tape measure has a thin slot. Drive a screw or a nail through this slot to hold the end of the tape measure while you do your measurement.

6. Block the door

This seems like a no brainer but to prevent any injuries to your family, block access to the exterior door that opens up to your future deck. Keep the door locked and attach caution tape or nail a piece of wood across the door opening.

7. Block the deck base

If your area has wild animals that dig, it’s wise to include an animal exclusion system in your deck plan. Deck skirting will not prevent diggers from making a home under your new deck.

8. Long lengths

It’s more accurate and faster to take a long piece of lumber, set it in place and mark the required length rather than using a tape measure. Remember to cut on the outside the marked line, otherwise the lumber will be short by the width of the saw blade.

9. Building codes

The building codes in your area can provide you with valuable information on the requirements for your deck. This information includes guidelines for stairs, railings, footings, substructure and decking material. It should be noted that often a building permit may be required if the deck will be directly attached to the home.

With the right preparation and attention to detail, you can create a beautiful, safe outdoor space that lasts years. By following these expert tips and staying organized throughout the process, you’ll be well on your way to successfully building your deck. The Deck Experts at TIMBER MART are here to guide you with advice, tools, and materials to make your deck-building journey as smooth as possible.
