Garage door openers are available in different weight capacities, three types of horsepower (1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, 1 HP) and with assorted optional features. They are also available in four different drive types, which is the mechanism that lifts the door. Below are important factors for each of these drive types.
Chain-drive
This is perhaps the most common type of garage door opener. They are durable and affordable but can be noisy. They are recommended for heavy garage doors.
Belt-drive
If noise is an issue, a belt-drive opener is one of the quietest available but comes with a higher price tag. Some belt-drive models offer soft starts and stops that reduce noise even further.
Screw-drive
The screw-drive opener has a noise level somewhere between the chain-drive and the belt-drive. Screw-drives open the fastest and are recommended for lightweight doors.
Wall mount
This opener mounts to the wall on either side of the garage door, freeing up ceiling space and reducing noise and vibration in living spaces near the garage.
