What is fascia?

Fascia is part of the eaves system where the roof extends beyond the walls of a house. It’s the vertical trim board that is attached at the roofline, just under the roof overhang. An easy way to identify fascia is by the vertical plane that “faces” you. It functions structurally as part of the roof construction and also serves as a trim piece for a neat, finished look.

Fascia helps support the weight of the roof overhang and is the surface where gutters are attached. It also covers the ends of the rafters and trusses, preventing moisture from entering the roof’s structure.

Fascia is often confused with soffits, which are located on the underside of the overhanging roof. Soffits function differently by playing a key role in allowing air to circulate into the roof system.

Soffits and fascia are often installed at the same time because they work together, but each has a different function.
