How to patch drywall holes

Slight damage to drywall is not that unusual and can be easily repaired with spackle or perhaps a bit of mesh tape along with spackle for larger holes. But occasionally, you may be faced with a very large hole that will require a patch of drywall.

Have no fear, it’s a fairly easy repair. The steps below can be used for any size of large hole and will give you a great result.

1. Assess the damage and measure the size of the hole to determine the size of patch.

2. Cut a clean square edge around the hole where your drywall patch will fit into.

3. Attach a support with drywall screws that you will screw your drywall patch into.

4. Fit your drywall patch into the hole and attach to the support with a drywall screw.

5. Use a self-adhering mesh patch to cover the the entire hole and the drywall screws.

6. Cover the mesh with layers of spackle and feather edges. Once dry, sand until smooth and paint.
