Ramp up your dining room style this Christmas

Christmas is a time for gathering and feasting in your home’s dining room. Whether you are hosting a large group or an intimate affair, your dining room will be the celebration hub.

Most dining rooms are fairly simple – a table and chairs, chandelier, a couple pictures on the wall and perhaps a sideboard and rug. And that’s it. Sometimes this room’s style can look a little flat. A great way to make an impressive high-end statement is to look to the walls. Adding a surface detail to your walls is an inexpensive way to create big style.

There are hundreds of designs to choose from, which way you go should be determined by the style you are going for. For a traditional formal look, add moulding in panels from floor to ceiling. For a more relaxed casual look, add flat-stock in the style of board and batten.

Wainscotting that goes part way up the walls is another option. Usually, wainscotting has a height of 36 to 42 inches from the floor but can also extend to eye level or a little higher.

There are no steadfast rules when it comes to design. A good way to map out your design is to apply masking tape directly on the walls. From there, it’s easier to make changes and perfect your design before committing.
